Magnetic Yokes are used for the non-destructive testing (NDT) of ferromagnetic materials such as mild steel and 3CR12. This process, known as Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI), is commonly used to detect weak points such as bad welds, cracks, or lack of fusion in fabricated components.
These yokes are portable, easy to use, and require no external power. They work by inducing a magnetic field into the test material, making them ideal for workshops, fabrication yards, and field inspections.
How Magnetic Particle Inspection Works
- Apply Contrast Paint: A layer of white, orange, or yellow paint is sprayed onto the test surface to create a visible background.
- Introduce Magnetic Field: Place the permanent magnetic yoke across the area being tested (e.g., welds or corners).
- Apply Magnetic Ink: Spray black magnetic ink over the area. The ink particles gather at points where the magnetic field leaks, forming visible black lines.
By examining these black lines, you can quickly identify cracks, lack of fusion, incomplete penetration, and other flaws. Permanent magnetic yokes reveal both surface and near-surface defects.
